A MAN was tonight being held in police custody on suspicion of murder after a man was found dead at a flat in Bradford.

Police and paramedics were called to a block of flats in Ascot Parade, Horton Bank Top, at 5.40pm yesterday to reports that someone had collapsed.

Emergency services found the victim, who was believed to be aged in his 50s, had suffered serious head injures.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police arrested a 47-year-old man on suspicion of murder and he was taken into custody for questioning.

Officers are not currently looking for anyone else in connection with the inquiry, said a West Yorkshire Police spokesman.

Forensics officers arrived at the flat at about noon today to carry out detailed investigations of the scene.

Detectives were also carrying out house-to-house inquiries to try to ascertain what had happened.

The block of eight flats where the man was found is said by neighbours to be a place for former offenders to live while they try to rebuild their lives.

One neighbour, who did not want to be named, said: “We heard arguing. There is arguing all the time there - we are used to it now.

“It happens so often, we just assumed it was normal. It is sad, really.”

She added that she believed the man who died was the same person who would play football in the street with local youngsters.

“There has always been different types of people living there,” she said.

“This lot seem like ones who are trying to settle in and do something good. They have put Christmas decorations up and things like that.

“Normally there are windows being smashed and things thrown out of windows.”

One dog walker said: “I have been living around here for 16 years and there has been nothing but trouble here.”

However, another neighbour said she had lived in the area for 18 years and had not known anything like this happening before.

“It’s very quiet around here. It’s a nice area so something like this is upsetting to hear. It’s very sad," she said.

“I don’t know who has died only that it happened in the flats over the road.

“I went out at around 5.30pm yesterday evening it had all happened by the time I got back.

"It must have happened inside because we’ve seen police inside and people taking photographs who I assume were forensics people but apart from that I can’t really add anything.

"I am going to give a statement to the police later on but I can’t really tell them much either because I didn’t see anything and don’t know anyone who lives in the flats.

“It’s a very sad thing to happen just before Christmas and especially for his family if he has any.”

Councillor Angela Tait (Lab, Royds) said she was very concerned to hear that the man's death was being treated as murder.

"I'd like to send my deep condolences to his family," she said.

A police presence remained outside the flats tonight as the investigation continued.
