THE Sunbridgewells underground complex will officially open next month.

The complex, off Centenary Square and built underneath Sunbridge Road, Upper Millergate and Ivegate, will open in two stages.

The long-awaited project will open its doors to the public on Saturday, December 10, at a time yet to be confirmed.

Graham Hall, of Yeadon-based developer, Sunbridgewells, said it will open for a series of tester events to VIPs before the official opening.

He said: “It will officially open on December 10. It’s looking good. We are just doing the finishing touches to it now, doing the cleaning up and the middle bar is almost finished too.

“We will do some dry runs before the official opening to make sure that it is all working.”

Developers revealed the cost of the project had risen by £1 million to £1.9m after the space increased from 12,000 sq ft to 24,000 sq ft.

Its first phase, including 14 shops, a Laurel and Hardy-themed bar, a tapas restaurant, a 1920s bar and a traditional-style pub, will open initially.

The long-awaited scheme was originally due to open in late 2014.
