Three men involved in the robbery of a pensioner who died after being punched once to the head in the attack at his flat had their "unduly lenient" sentences increased by a Court of Appeal.

Paul Crummack, now 21, who threatened 67-year-old Melvin Baldwin with an iron bar before delivering the single blow, had his total sentence increased from three and a half years to five years after his original term was challenged by the Attorney General, Lord Goldsmith QC.

Retired banker Mr Baldwin, of Valley Road, Shipley Fields, who suffered from a heart condition, slumped back into his chair after the punch but showed no obvious signs of a serious injury. A week later he complained of headaches and was rushed to hospital, but he became unconscious and died.

He had suffered an "unsurvivable brain injury" which was a "direct result" of the blow to his face, Bradford Crown Court heard in March, when Crummack and two others were sentenced.

Crummack had admitted manslaughter and two counts of robbery - of Mr Baldwin and a friend who was at the flat at the time.

He was sentenced to three years and six months for the manslaughter with concurrent sentences of two years and six months for the robberies.

At the appeal court, Lord Justice Hooper, sitting with Mr Justice Holman and Mr Justice Burton, agreed with submissions on behalf of the Attorney General that those sentences were unduly lenient.

They imposed sentences of five years for the robberies and increased the manslaughter sentence to five years, all concurrently.

Ali Lee Campbell, now 30, originally jailed for two years and nine months after admitting two counts of robbery and Michael Stell, 22, who pleaded guilty to the same robbery charges and was sentenced to two and a half years, each had their "unduly lenient" sentences increased to five years.

Crummack and the two other men, who lived together at Coronation Mount, Keighley, visited Mr Baldwin's flat in September last year to carry out the robbery.

The court heard that the victim knew Campbell. Mr Baldwin and the friend were robbed of electrical goods.
