A mother-of-three who has battled cancer three times is hosting a charity event to help other sufferers.

Landlady of Bingley's Brown Cow pub Joanne Thirkell was 28 when doctors, removing a benign tumour in her bowel, discovered a second, cancerous tumour.

The tumour was removed and she underwent chemo-therapy. The treatment appeared to have been successful, but 13 months later the cancer was back.

The disease shifted to her colon and six weeks ago Joanne underwent an operation to remove part of her colon and small bowel.

She is still undergoing chemotherapy, but is hopeful the cancer is now beaten.

Joanne, 34, who took over as licensee of the Brown Cow last April, said: "When I found out, it was strange. It took a while to sink in and I just thought of my children, Christopher, Jayne and Jonathan.

"You go through denial, it is just the word cancer', it is enough to frighten anybody. After they removed the first tumour, they were so sure I would be ok, but nothing is 100 per cent.

"I am more positive this time. I want to give something back to Manorlands.

"A couple of people I met in Leeds General Hospital have gone to Manorlands and sadly some have passed away. I lost my nana and granddad to bowel cancer. It is something close to my heart."

She and her uncle, Neal Jeffrey, will host a music festival at the Brown Cow on August 26.

Manorlands fundraising manager Jodie Shepherd said: "We are delighted to have been chosen to benefit from this event."

Bands to suit all tastes will be at the event from noon to 11.30pm. Tickets are £5 and are available at the pub, Bingley Council Shop and other shops along Bingley's Main Street.
