Anxious residents say their community is living in fear of the antics of motorists on Prune Park Lane, Allerton.

They have now started a petition to call for new safety measures on the 30mph Bradford road after a Peugeot 306 car hit a parked Volvo V70 and ended up on its roof.

Two men, who sustained minor injuries, were arrested on suspicion of drink driving and bailed pending further inquiries into the incident at 8.40pm on Wednesday.

Worried residents say the incident is the latest in a succession of collisions on the road, which widens towards Sandy Lane.

"If you owned a Porsche, you would see this stretch of wide inviting road and open up the throttle because there's nothing in place to stop you," said Mike Craft, of Rosedale Avenue, just off Prune Park Lane.

"Residents are concerned that Prune Park Lane is akin to a race track, with Subaru Imprezas and high-powered motorbikes flying up and down.

"Road safety cameras would quell the problem. Children have to cross this road to catch the bus to school and parents fear their children are at high risk. Will it take the death of a child for this council and the police to consider road safety measures?"

Councillor Valerie Binney (Con, Thornton and Allerton) said work was ongoing to get traffic calming measures installed and that speed cameras would be welcome.

She said: "The aftermath of the latest accident looked horrendous and, when I saw it, I was certain someone had been killed."

Julie Overton, who started the petition after Wednesday's collision, said: "Speeding cars and motorbikes are a real hazard on this road. Even after the accident, which blocked half the road, cars were still flying up and down past the overturned car. I couldn't believe how insensitive that was.

"We were out in the garden when we heard the noise and went running out to see what had happened. We spoke to other residents who were hanging around the scene and they all feel the same - we need action now."

A Bradford Council spokesman said: "Bradford West Area Committee has allocated funding to improve the Prune Park Lane and Rosedale Avenue junction within its budget for this financial year."

Sergeant Paul Richardson, roads policing manager for the Bradford North division, said: "I have to focus resources on roads that have a high casualty and collision rate. In the last 12 months, I have got roads that have almost 50 casualties, so that's where my priorities are.

"Prune Park, to the best of my knowledge, does not hit the spotlight as far as casualties are concerned, but that's not to say there are no issues of speeding on there. They would be dealt with by the neighbourhood policing team."
