Struggling camera chain Jessops has announced plans to close one of its Bradford stores as part of a package of 550 job losses and 81 store closures in a bid to revive its fortunes.

Following the announcement of the closures a company spokesman confirmed that the firm's Kirkgate store was one of those to be axed.

He also said that the firm could not promise continued employment or relocation to the staff there.

The other city centre store in Bank Street will remain open.

Jessops said the cost-cutting drive came as a result of pre-tax losses of £25.2 million for the six months to April 1.

The company cited heavy internet and supermarket competition in its key digital camera markets.

Six stores have already closed, with another 19 at the end of their leases, including the Kirkgate store.

The company plans to develop its website, Jessops.com, and refocus the business on the growing digital printing and photo merchandising markets.

It also aims to improve the layout of its existing stores with increased focus on higher margin photo gift and accessory sales.

Chief executive Chris Langley said: "Our results show the extent of the tough market conditions we have faced in the past eight months and the severe price deflation affecting our market."

Mr Langley added that the market "was likely to remain challenging", but said the company would have a stronger platform for the future following the changes.
