People are being asked to give their views on proposals to open a new academy secondary school in Bradford.

Plans to replace Rhodesway School in Allerton are being presented at a series of public meetings until Friday, July 20.

The new school could open as early as September 2008 and would provide 1,200 places for 11 to 16-year-olds and 240 places for post-16 students.

Representatives at the British Edutrust Foundation (BEF), the sponsors of the proposed academy, are working with Bradford Council and Education Bradford to outline a "vision" for the project.

The formal consultation period is set to finish on Monday, July 23. A formal submission will then be sent to the Council and the DfES for approval.

If accepted, the project will move into its implementation phase. The academy is planned to open on the existing Rhodesway premises until a new building is completed during the 2009/10 school year.

BEF chairman Lord Amir Bhatia said: "This is a very exciting time for Bradford and for all those connected with Rhodesway School. Edutrust is proud to be part of plans to support the development of education for future generations.

"We want to work with staff, students, parents and carers at Rhodesway School to build on their progress and create an environment which will support students to be successful.

"We are committed to ensuring the needs of all students are recognised."

Bradford secondary school head teachers will be asked to give their views on the proposals for Rhodesway at a meeting on June 28 at Bankfield Hotel, Bingley.

A presentation will be given at the Lower Grange and Allerton Forum, Ley Top Primary School, Avenel Road, Allerton, at 7pm today. A meeting for parents will take place at the Palace Wedding and Function Hall, City Road, Bradford, tomorrow at 6pm. A meeting for parents and carers of Rhodesway pupils will take place on Saturday at Girlington Community Association Hall, Girlington Road, Bradford, at 6pm. A parents' meeting will be held next Friday at Grange Interlink, Summerville Road, Bradford, at 6pm.
