Supermarket chain Tesco met a wall of opposition from Ilkley people as its proposals for a new store close to the town centre went on show.

The firm hoped the prospect of easier parking, more products and creation of more than 100 new jobs in a new store on Railway Road would appeal to the community But Ilkley people have been quick to voice concern about increased traffic on Railway Road, the look of the proposed building and the plight of local retailers if the expanded store takes their trade.

Critics also asked why Tesco needs to build a new store when it already has a much-used supermarket nearby on Springs Lane, on the south side of the railway line to the proposed new site.

More than 200 people attended a public display run by the company in Ilkley Town Hall and Tesco says it is now examining traffic concerns in greater detail and studying other issues raised.
