Health visitors and school nurses across Bradford and Airedale are promoting infant car seat safety during Child Safety Week.

As part of the campaign an in-car safety consultant is carrying out free safety checks on infant car seats at supermarkets in the area.

Checks took place on Tuesday at Morrisons in Mayo Avenue when parents were shown how to correctly adjust car seats for optimum safety and given impartial advice about the suitability of existing seats.

The team was also at Netto in Canterbury Avenue on Tuesday and at Asda in Rooley Lane today.

On Tuesday, June 26, the team will be at Morrisons, Victoria Shopping Centre, Young Street from 9.30am to noon and 1pm to 4pm and at Morrisons in Worth Way, Keighley on Wednesday, June 27 from 9.30am to noon and 1pm to 4pm.

Hazel Ha, child accident prevention co-ordinator for Bradford and Airedale Teaching Primary Care Trust said: "Research shows that up to 70 per cent of infant car seats are not properly fitted and will not protect children in a serious accident.

"We are asking parent to spend five minutes of their time to learn from an expert about fitting the seats properly.

"Although we don't want accidents to happen, those five minutes might just save the lives of their children.

"Anyone with an infant car seat is welcome to come along for a free check."

Child Safety Week is organised by the national charity Child Accident Prevention Trust, to remind everyone who looks after children to take sensible precautions to keep them safe.
