THREE men appeared in court today, accused of intentionally wounding a 21-year-old who is critically ill in hospital.

Bradford and Keighley Magistrates Court was told that Mohammed Wariss had suffered multiple fractures to his face, a sustained traumatic brain injury and lacerations to his face.

He is in a medically induced coma on a ventilator in Leeds General Infirmary.

The court was told Mr Wariss was found unconscious, and had bled heavily from his face and head, following an incident in Hollybank Gardens, Great Horton, Bradford, on Monday evening.

Ajaz Saddiq, 37, of Hollybank Gardens; his brother Shahid Saddiq, 35, of Waverley Road, Great Horton; and a relative, 38-year-old Nazim Hussain, of Fairbank Road, Girlington, Bradford; are all charged with wounding Mohammed Wariss with intent to do him grievous bodily harm.

All three are also accused of violent disorder at Hollybank Gardens on October 3.

They appeared together in the secure dock at the magistrates court, flanked by three court custody officers.

A fourth man, Tariq Adalat, 34, of Northside Terrace, Lidget Green, Bradford, appeared separately before the magistrates. He was charged with violent disorder in relation to the same incident.

Adalat was also accused of driving a Volkswagen Golf car in Beckside Road, Great Horton, on October 3, while disqualified, and without insurance.

Prosecutor Nadine Clough said the charge of wounding with intent was an indictable offence and could only be dealt with at the crown court. She asked for the cases to be sent to the crown court and applied for all four defendants to be remanded in custody.

She said police inquiries were ongoing into an earlier ‘road rage’ incident in Beckside Road

Solicitors Abdul Iftikhar, representing Hussain, and Sajad Chaudhury, for the Saddiq brothers, both applied for bail on behalf of their clients.

They said their clients would be pleading not guilty and bail with stringent conditions could satisfy any concerns of the prosecution and the court.

Tahir Ayub, solicitor for Adalat, said the matters were denied and would be contested at trial

Mr Ayub said his client’s concern was for Mr Wariss, who is his nephew.

He said bail could be granted with strict conditions.

The Bench agreed to remand all four defendants into custody.

Chairman Mrs Patricia Tillotson said the offences were so serious they could not be dealt with at magistrates court.

All four defendants will next appear at Bradford Crown Court on November 3.
