POLICE investigating an attack on a Bradford street which left a 21-year-old man in a "critical" condition have arrested a man on suspicion of possessing a firearm and two women on suspicion of assisting an offender.

During the incident, a gun was fired, damaging a car.

Residents described scenes “from an action movie” as armed officers swooped on the residential street in Great Horton.

Police said the attack victim was in a critical but stable condition.

Officers were called to a house in Hollybank Gardens, Great Horton, at about 8pm on Monday after receiving a report of a man with a firearm.

As armed officers attended, police received further reports of what were thought to be gunshots at the location and of a man being assaulted.

The officers found the 21-year-old badly injured man at the scene.

This evening a police spokesman described his condition as "critical but stable."

A second man was taken to hospital with minor injuries to his hand.

Three men, aged 35, 37 and 38, were arrested at the scene on suspicion of assault. They remain in custody.

Today a 34 year old man was arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life. He too remains in custody.

Two women, aged 22 and 19, were arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. They have tonight been released on bail.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “Following inquiries at the scene, police have confirmed there was a firearms discharge, but the injuries are not believed to have been caused by this.”

The spokesman said at least one, and possibly two, shots were fired, which had caused damage to a blue Audi A4.

Hollybank Gardens, a cul-de-sac of stone-built semi-detached properties, remained sealed off yesterday, with four uniformed police officers at the scene.

Three lines of police tape had been put up at the bottom and two rows of tape at the top to protect the crime scene.

In front of the houses could be seen a dark Audi car with its front end badly damaged. Facing it was a white Audi with the driver’s door open and damaged.

Sandwiched between those cars was an car of of unidentified make with a broken passenger window.

Shattered glass could be seen in the road, and a bloodied object.

A Toyota car parked near to the Audi was smeared with blood.

Residents yesterday described a large police presence on the street in the aftermath of the attack.

One said: “The road was blocked from last night. There is still a large presence of CID and scenes-of-crime officers. The incident is obviously serious.”

The resident said another nearby road, Tannerhill Road, also had a large police presence.

During the day, two police cars could be seen at both the top and bottom of the street and three lines of police tape cordoned off the area.

Another resident, of Hollybank Road, who did not want to named, said: “It was at about half eight last night. Police sealed off a section of Bartle Lane and Hollybank Road.

“It was like a scene from an action movie and there were blue flashing lights.”

He said there were eight or nine police vehicles “going off in all directions”.

“I then saw three men being arrested. They were taken off in three different vehicles,” he added.

Another Hollybank Road resident, who did not want to be named, said: “It was scary, I’ve never seen anything like it before. Why did it happen here?”

Councillor Abdul Jabar, the portfolio holder responsible for neighbourhoods and community safety and who represents the Great Horton ward, said: “I am aware of the incident but I am not going to comment until the police have completed their investigation.”

Councillor Tariq Hussain (Lab, Great Horton) said he could not comment because he was not aware of the incident.

The T&A could not contact the third councillor, Joanne Dodds.

Last month, police reassured the public after concerns over a spate of firearms incidents in the Bradford district, and armed officers deployed on the streets Nick Smart, chairman of West Yorkshire Police Federation, said: “Crime has changed.

“It is no longer like Dixon of Dock Green. There are individuals who are prepared to use firearms.

“But we will respond with highly trained and select officers who will do their utmost professionally to keep the public, and their colleagues safe.”
