A MAN was caught on CCTV buying duct tape he later used to tie up his partner's hands and feet before stabbing her to death, an inquest has heard.

Anthony Roberts, 37, had previously told friends Guida Rufino had thrown him out of the home they shared and was using their young daughter as a weapon against him.

He also told them he would not become “a weekend dad”, an inquest into 38-year-old Miss Rufino’s death heard today.

Bradford Coroner Martin Fleming found that the businesswoman was unlawfully killed by teaching assistant Mr Roberts at their home in Cross Road, Idle, on January 31 this year.

Her throat had been slashed, she had been stabbed in the chest four times by Mr Roberts who then went on to stab himself in the groin, bleeding to death in the bath upstairs.

The hearing was told Ms Rufino’s friend Johanna Coleman was at the house when Mr Roberts turned up that day because it was likely he would not take the news well of being told to pack his things and go.

In the attack, Mr Roberts had also tied Ms Coleman up, took her phone away and carried her off to another room where she had to listen to her friend screaming and pleading for her life.

A terrified Ms Coleman later managed to free herself from the tape and jump out of a window to get help.

When police forced their way into the house they discovered Ms Rufino’s body covered in a blood-soaked sheet behind the sofa and Mr Roberts's body in the bath. Two knives were in the sink.

Ms Rufino had confided in family and friends that Mr Roberts had been violent to her before and that she was going to tell him to leave.

She had said it was unfair Mr Roberts depended on her, thought of her money as their money, did not clean up and had a different take on bringing up their two-year-old child which caused a strain.

She had referred to him as a 'manchild'.

Before the birth of their child, the couple had led a party-style life and Mr Roberts had wanted that to continue, the inquest heard.

Mr Roberts’s mother, Teresa Roberts, said in a statement that her family had also been destroyed by what happened.

“I wake up every morning wishing I was dead”.

Adding: “However, I do believe Guida would deliberately cause issues to keep Tony in his place and show she was in control.”

Ms Rufino’s mother, Cecilia Dacosta, responded that Mr Roberts was the controlling one in the relationship and added: “Guida was never looking down on anyone.”

Mrs Dacosta said she had since devoted her life to looking after the couple’s child.

Mr Fleming said the CCTV footage of Mr Roberts buying the duct tape shortly before the attack was evidence that it was premeditated and that he had been fixated on inflicting grievous injury.

“I’m satisfied Anthony Roberts inflicted the stab wounds with the intent to cause Guida’s death. She was unlawfully killed,” he said.
