Police have today released the name of the cyclist who died following a fatal road accident in Bingley.

Andrew Platten, who was 55 and from Bingley, died after his bicycle was hit by a silver Vauxhall Vectra in Cottingley Cliffe Road at about 7.34pm on Tuesday.

His family described him as a well-respected academic, who was a loyal friend and family man, with a passion for cycling.

A post-mortem examination confirmed he died of multiple injuries.

The driver and sole occupant of the Vectra, a 22-year-old man from Bradford, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

He has been released on bail pending further enquiries.

Dr Platten’s family has also issued a statement today in tribute to him, which reads: “Andrew excelled as a respected and dedicated academic, with a love for art, poetry and music. For anyone that knew him, cycling was his true passion as he became a recognised competitive rider on the roads.

“Most importantly he was a loved friend, loyal brother and uncle, loving partner and a truly inspirational father.

"He will be deeply missed, but he has left his stamp on all who met him. He will always be cherished and never forgotten, living on in all our hearts.”

A public post on Dr Platten's Facebook page described a "wonderful kind hearted da."

The message, from Adamski Ayodele Platten, was posted yesterday and said:

"To all of you family, friends and colleagues alike, my wonderful kind hearted da passed away last night after a collision on his bike. To all this will be a shock given how young and full of Yorkshire bread grit and life he was full of.

"To my dad I love, admire and respect you always and you've been an incredible source of inspiration, I'll miss you always. Have a safe ride into the next life."

Dr Platten was the chairman of the Centre for Knowledge Excellence, an enterprise hub based at Leeds Beckett University.

A letter to his colleagues there today also praised Dr Platten's work ethic and described his distinguished career.

"We write with deep sadness to inform you that CKE chair and much valued colleague and friend,  Dr Andrew Platten, passed away in a cycling accident on Tuesday evening.

"Andrew was instrumental in setting up CKE, then known as Construction Knowledge Exchange, in 2007. Since its inception Andrew took an active role in promoting CKE activity and its associated business networks; Green Vision, Constructing Excellence Yorkshire and Humber and thinkBIM.

"He continued to work with the regional construction sector throughout, serving as Deputy Chair of CIOB Yorkshire and building strong relationships with significant regional bodies, industry groups and companies.

"In addition, Andrew was an integral part of Leeds Beckett University, leading on international work and collaborations," it said.

"He travelled regularly and fostered University links with China, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Mauritius.  He also remained firmly committed to teaching, on both undergraduate and post graduate modules, for the building services engineering courses.

"Andrew was very widely published, having written more than 45 academic papers in the field of construction and construction management.

"His contributions to both CKE and University initiatives were invaluable during the course of his almost eight years' service.

"As a team who have worked very closely with Andrew, we always found him to be a very supportive and caring colleague with a strong commitment to the University, our students and our business networks and partners. His technical and industry expertise were invaluable, in particular his enthusiasm for all things "BIM" which shone through in all his work.

"He will be very muched missed and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time."
