AN information board has been placed to help cyclists riding the Great Northern Railway Trail, after it was sponsored by members of the Rotary Club of Bradford West.

The board includes information about the Thornton section of route 69 of the Sustrans National Cycleway.

This paved, off-road section of the trail follows the route of the old Great Northern Railway track, as it snakes between Queensbury and Thornton, passing through cuttings and across embankments and traversing the Thornton viaduct.

The information board is between the entrance to the trail on Thornton Road and the viaduct. It faces onto Thornton Primary School that, itself, stands on the site previously occupied by Thornton Station and goods yard.

Robin Naylor, co-ordinator of the volunteer Rangers for the Great Northern Railway Trail, said: "The trail has become really popular with both walkers, cyclists and bike riders who live locally as well as from further afield.

"It opens up new vistas across Bradford and provides a safe route for healthy living activities for people of all ages and abilities.

"The new information Board provides historical details about the Thornton section of the trail plus maps of local walking routes.

"It's a brilliant donation from the local Rotary Club that will certainly enhance the experience of users of the trail."
