AN “absolutely crazy” driver caught on camera overtaking at high speed on a 30mph road in Bradford can expect a visit from the police.

A dash-cam belonging to another motorist captured the moment a grey Mercedes sped along Dick Lane in Tyersal, travelling over chevrons as it passed at least two vehicles.

The driver who captured the incident – which happened on Thursday, June 16, at 11.55am near Dick Lane’s junction with Dudley Street – was travelling at about 27mph at the time. It is estimated the Mercedes was doing at least twice the 30mph limit.

Sergeant Cameron Buchan, who is leading the police’s Operation Steerside crackdown on dangerous drivers, said a specialist would view the footage to work out, using landmarks in the clip, exactly what speed the Mercedes was doing.

Police would also be tracking the owner of the car down after getting the vehicle’s registration number from the video footage, said Sgt Buchan.

Sgt Buchan said of the incident: “It is selfish. It is another selfish driver that is quite prepared to put other drivers at risk for their own purposes, and with a disregard for others.

“It shows a high disregard for other people.”

He added: “It is absolutely flying and is going significantly faster than the other vehicles. It looks like that Mercedes is going twice as fast at the very least.”

Councillor Alan Wainwright (Lab, Tong) said: “It is absolutely crazy. And there is far too much of it.

“I condemn any dangerous driving – there is no need for it. And there is no need to overtake like that.

“Whoever is overtaking you, you will usually catch up with them at the next traffic lights. I have had people overtake me on there as well.”

He added: “There is no need for it anywhere. You get it on country lanes as well. Many times I have had to dive into a bush to avoid a speeding car.

“It needs stamping out all together – but that will be difficult.”

Cllr Wainwright praised police for Steerside, which has seen more than 3,300 drivers caught in five months.

“I have to commend the police for the work they have done over the last few months,” he said. “I urge them to keep up the good work.”

The driver who captured the footage said: “He passed me as if I was standing still, so I would estimate at least double the speed limit. And I had just passed a zebra crossing so if there had been anybody on it they would not have had a chance. There absolutely no excuse for driving like that.”
