THE boss of a Bradford city centre bar has cancelled a controversial event following criticism from members of the public.

Bentley's Live Lounge, in Godwin Street, originally planned to hold a wet T-shirt competition on Sunday, but the event has now been called off.

The venue will now be hosting a karaoke contest in its place on Sunday, with a cash prize of £100.

Some members of the public described the wet T-shirt event as "sleazy" and said it was "taking the city back to the 1970s", but the club's owners defended the event as "just a bit of fun".

Co-owner of the bar Jason Avgousti said the company wanted to respect the views of the local community.

He said: "We have decided to cancel the event and replace it with a karaoke contest because it is important to us that we understand what the community want and we do not want to upset people.

"The karaoke contest will be taking place instead, with free bubbly for all participants and a £100 prize for the winner."

The karaoke event will take place from 7.30pm at the city centre bar.
