A TEENAGER accused of driving a car that crashed into a church wall and killed a 15-year-old front seat passenger did not contact two brothers to act as his "high-speed salvation", a court heard.

Syam Khan, 19, of Kimberley Street, Laisterdyke, denies causing the death of Saliq Malik by dangerous driving.

The schoolboy died from severe head and neck injuries after the Volkswagen Golf slid sideways out of control in Gilpin Street, Barkerend, Bradford, on the morning of September 12, 2014.

It is alleged that a Volkswagen Jetta, containing Yasser, 28, and Nadeem Hussain, 29, both of Gladstone Street, Bradford Moor, attended the scene to allow Khan to "get away", but his barrister, Andrew Dallas, said his client was not friends with the pair.

"Police are unable to say Syam Khan made contact with anyone to take him from the scene," said Mr Dallas.

"The prosecution simply cannot show he was summoning those two."

Mr Dallas said Khan had not shown the "paranoia of the guilty" and fled the scene straightaway, with the Jetta not arriving until more than three minutes after the crash.

Khan told the jury at Bradford Crown Court he had not made a phone call to anyone from the scene and denies being the driver of the car, insisting he was a back seat passenger.

He has pleaded not guilty to causing serious injury to Haris Khan by dangerous driving.

He also faces a joint charge of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice, alongside the Hussains, and 21-year-old Waqas Iqbal, of Florence Street, Laisterdyke.

All deny the charge.

The trial continues.
