TRAGIC toddler Issac Brocklehurst was riding a toy vehicle when he was killed by a lorry in Shipley, an inquest opening heard today.

Bradford Coroner's Court was told that the two-year-old was riding the four-wheeled, non-powered buggy when he went through an open gateway and into the path of a tipper truck on Valley Road.

Issac, whose address was given in court as Thursby Street, Barkerend, was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene of the accident, which happened last Tuesday at about 1.10pm. He was identified at the scene by his grandma, the court heard.

Bradford coroner Martin Fleming said: "This is the opening of the inquest into the very sad death of Issac John Walter Brocklehurst.

"This is a tragic and heartbreaking case."

Coroner's officer Sam Cariss told the court: "Issac was using a four-wheel ride-on, push-along vehicle, which was non-powered, on paths leading to and from nearby properties.

"He rode towards an open gate and sadly did not stop and rode out into the path of oncoming traffic."

He added: "The collision resulted in fatal injuries."

Mr Cariss told the court that police were carrying out a "robust investigation" into the collision and whether any evasive action was taken by the lorry's driver, and added: "They have ruled out blame at this stage."

The inquest was adjourned until May 10.
