AN IMPATIENT motorist who was caught on camera driving into oncoming traffic in Bradford is likely to face police action - as the number of drivers caught in a crackdown passed the 500 mark.

The person behind the wheel of a black Toyota Yaris can expect a visit from officers, said a spokesman for the West Yorkshire force, after a piece of "selfish" driving on Shearbridge Road was captured on another motorist's dashcam.

The car can be heard accelerating along the wrong side of the road, before it passes at least three vehicles and causes another driver coming the other way to take evasive action.

Bradford Telegraph and Argus:

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: "We will look at the footage and carry out the relevant enquiries."

The motorist who captured the incident said the driver was "one of the many idiot drivers around Bradford", and added: "The driver in the black Toyota Yaris was too impatient and decided to drive into oncoming traffic."

Councillor Nazam Azam (Lab, City) said of the Yaris motorist's driving: "It is pointless - as it is most of the time. It is a second or two difference and the consequences could be very harsh.

"You could end up with fatalities on the road.

"Drivers need to think, is it worth it, overtaking, when you put forward the consequences that could come from their rush and impatience."

He added: "I don't believe it is only specific just to Bradford. I believe it is an issue with young, immature drivers and it will be as bad in places like London and Birmingham, and across the country, as it is in Bradford.

"Obviously, Bradford does have a high proportion of young drivers and it does need tackling. Police are doing a brilliant job.

"Drivers need to be more patient. We have had a few fatal accidents in the district and a lot of the time it is naivety that causes them.

"The message to get across is to be more considerate. It is a matter of being patient and considering and respecting other road users.

"They are putting everyone at risk, including themselves."

Mike Bristow, of road safety charity Brake, said: "This driver certainly has no care or respect for any of the other road users. Selfish drivers, like the one in this video, are not only putting their own lives at risk, but are endangering the lives of other road users."

Meanwhile, Operation Steerside - which is a Telegraph & Argus-inspired police crackdown on dangerous driving in Bradford - has snared 530 motorists in three weeks. The operation also received praise from Cllr Azam.

"The police are doing a great job in actually tackling this anti-social driving issue we have in Bradford," he said.

Of the drivers caught during the operation, 193 have been snared for speeding, 172 for not wearing a seatbelt, 55 for using a mobile phone at the wheel and 37 for having no insurance. Another 73 were caught for other motoring offences.

Among those caught were two disqualified drivers who were captured speeding, and a 26-year-old Manningham man who rammed police cars and other vehicles with a suspected stolen Audi as he tried to flee officers who stopped him in East Bowling.

He was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and driving without a licence.

The week three Steerside figures were: speeding 77; mobile phone use 21; not wearing a seatbelt 38; no insurance 12; other 36.
