DOG lovers were given the chance to hug a puppy for charity at an event in Bradford.

The cute canines filled the University of Bradford's student union exhibition space, Student Central, yesterday.

Those who attended paid £2 each to get their hands on one of six golden retriever and Labrador puppies for 15 minutes, with all proceeds going to the Guide Dogs charity.

More than 200 students and staff from the University of Bradford helped the event raise an estimated £500.

Subira Ismail, community and welfare officer for the University of Bradford's student union, and event organiser, said: "It was an absolutely fantastic event. It was such a fulfilling experience.

"It was great to put smiles on the students and staff's faces. Everyone enjoyed it.

"The puppies will help a blind person go back to work when they are older. It was amazing to raise the money for such a good cause.

"It just shows you that dogs are a way to everyone's heart.

"The puppies will be back in May to help the students de-stress during exam time."

This was one of the events held as part of the university's raise and give (RAG) week. Others taking place until Friday, February 19, include a blind food challenge.
