TIMBER buried beneath the now-demolished Drummond Mill is still smouldering a fortnight on, the fire service has said.

Two weeks after the fire destroyed the mill, firefighters were yesterday back at Lumb Lane, Bradford, to put more water onto the smoking ruins.

A fire service spokesman said water was being put on the ruins as "some spots have flared up".

"There is buried timber which is smouldering away," said the spokesman.

Fire investigators are continuing to try to discover what caused the blaze.

A fire service spokesman said: "The investigation is not closed, although we don't yet have a cause. It is very much open and are are trying to determine the origin of the fire," said the spokesman.

We have not had a permanent presence there, but we have been carrying out regular revisits to check for any hot spots. Firefighters will be there for several days to damp down and minimise smoke for the surrounding area.”

Meanwhile, the owners of the site are preparing to have the area cleared of masonry and other debris after the remainder of the mill was demolished.

Yaseen Mohammed, site manager, said discussions were taking place with a number of contractors about clearing the site.

"It may take a while to appoint a contractor to clear the site and make it ready for whatever happens in the future," he said.
