A BOWLING club says repairs are desperately needed to the dilapidated building it uses as its clubhouse.

Oakworth Bowling Club says recent bad weather has made the condition of the two-storey property in Holden Park even worse than it already was, rendering it unsafe to use.

The group's secretary, Roy Sanderson, warned: "The ground flood ceiling has collapsed due to the heavy rain and the already poor condition of the building. The very existence of the bowling club remains in doubt."

He explained that the building dates back to the time of the original 19th century house built by St Isaac Holden which was destroyed in a fire.

"Our clubhouse used to be on the first floor, but we moved downstairs into what used to be the park keeper's office," he said.

"The building has gradually deteriorated over the years and we've had problems with vandalism.

"The windows are in a shocking state, the carpet inside is soaked and water is running over the electrics.

"Bradford Council came up here two weeks ago, and said the estimated cost of fixing the roof is £10,000."

Mr Sanderson, who lives in Oakworth, said the sorry state of the property means the club has nowhere to accommodate visiting teams. Its new season is due to begin in early April.

A spokesman for Bradford Council responded: “Officers have inspected the building and met club members to try and find a way to make repairs so it can be used again.

“We are still discussing the best way forward and a decision should be made soon.”
