VISITORS to Bradford can enjoy a flipping good time today as the district celebrates Shrove Tuesday, commonly known as Pancake Day.
The Pavilion Cafe Bar in City Park has added pancakes to its menu especially to mark the day, and chef Ellen Mitchell got some practice in yesterday outside the eatery, which enjoys views across the Mirror Pool to City Hall.
Shrove Tuesday is a day in February or March preceding Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent.
Pancakes are traditionally associated with the day preceding Lent because they were a way to use up rich foods such as eggs, milk, and sugar, before the 40-day fasting season.
Elsewhere in the district, local schools and members of the Ilkley Rotary Club have been gearing up for the town's annual pancake race, which takes place today.
Children and adults, many in fancy dress, will be racing along The Grove with frying pans and pancakes, with money raised going to local rotary charities.
