A BARBER'S shop boss has told how an "annoying" raider left him with a £200 repair bill during a spate of weekend business break ins at a Bradford suburb.

A handful of shops were targeted in the Wibsey area, with a suspect smashing his way into premises.

CCTV footage caught the intruder using a paving slab to ram the glass panel of the front door of the Hair@172 hair salon in Wibsey High Street.

The raider fled empty-handed when the laminated glass failed to smash. But shop owner Mark Stott had to pay £200 for a glazier to replace the damaged panel.

Mr Stott said yesterday: "We have never had anything like this before. It's just annoying that some idiot can do this in the middle of the night."

Mr Stott said he was contacted by police at about 3.30am to tell him there had been a break in at his premises.

He said: "The big stone that he had tried to break in with was still there. I boarded up the door and got a glazier out to repair it.

"We looked at the CCTV and you could see this guy walking blatantly down the High Street with the paving stone. He walks up to the door. He has a scarf over his face and he rams the paving stone at the glass in the door."

Mr Stott said the vibration sensors activated the burglar alarm and the raider made off.

He said the same person was thought to be responsible for similar raids at three shops and a house in Wibsey. They included a sandwich shop which had just opened, a pizza shop and another beauty salon.

Mr Stott said: "They were all the same type of break ins. I know it happens everywhere but Wibsey seems to be getting targeted at the moment. It's very frustrating. We put up hanging baskets in the summer and do our best to make the place look nice and then you get people damaging your property and trying to break in."

Councillor David Green (Lab, Wibsey), said he had been informed of the incidents and was trying to find out more information from police.

He said: "I hope that the police are able to use CCTV and other footage to identify the individual concerned and take action as soon as possible.

"The businesses on Wibsey High Street are integral to the village and I think we need to do what we can to ensure they are protected and able to continue their services without the recurrence of this sort of mindless behaviour."
