ARMED police arrested a 17-year-old man after being alerted to a suspicious Audi TT car in Bradford.

Police were alerted to a black Audi TT travelling at speed up Great Horton Road towards Shearbridge Road at about 12.23pm yesterday.

The teenager remains in custody this afternoon, police said at 3.30pm.

A police spokesman said: "The car matched the description of one involved in a road traffic incident in Great Horton Road on Wednesday where a firearm was reported to have been seen.

"Armed officers were deployed and the vehicle was stopped in Great Horton Road, close to Claremont without incident.

"A 17-year-old male from Bradford was arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence and the vehicle was recovered pending further enquiries."

As officers made the arrest, a large crowd gathered, among them students who were graduating today from Bradford University.

A man who saw the aftermath of the incident said several police cars were involved in making the arrest in the region of the pedestrian crossing near to the Sainsbury's store.

"It was quite a dangerous incident with it being a busy road and on graduation day. It was lucky that no-one got injured."

A takeaway worker said: "It was very dramatic, with lots of people out just watching. The road was blocked for about half an hour. There were people in graduation gowns who were taking their phones out."

As the incident unfolded, Sainsbury's staff closed the shop for around 20 minutes.
