WEST Yorkshire Police Federation has written an open letter to all West Yorkshire MPs about concerns over tomorrow's Comprehensive Spending Review.

Chairman Nick Smart said Shipley MP Philip Davies and Leeds North West member Greg Mulholland had already endorsed his letter, written on behalf of over 4,500 serving West Yorkshire police officers, and highlighting concerns about the review's impact on policing.

And West Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner, Mark Burns-Williamson, has also urged MPs to fight the proposed cuts.

In his letter, Mr Smart states: "We feel we must raise our deep concern about the proposed cuts to police budgets and the impact this will have on keeping the public of our county safe.

"The Home Office has a complete lack of understanding of what impact the cuts will have on the service."

He said cuts of 25 to 40 per cent would weaken the police's ability to keep the public safe.

Mr Burns-Williamson accused the Government of taking an unnecessary gamble with public safety.

"Cuts will inevitably have an adverse effect on front line policing, particularly neighbourhood policing," he said.

He urged MPs to use their influence to fight the proposed cuts.

"Cutting police that provide the crucial link in our neighbourhoods and communities will be a huge mistake and I urge the Government to think again at this late stage."
