A MEMBER of a choir which sings carols every year at Bradford's Christmas Star Appeal event is to remember her late husband by hanging her own star on the tree.

Mollie Butler is part of the Fairfax Singers group which regularly keeps guests entertained at the special City Hall event, held in December each year.

Up to 20 members of the Burley-In-Wharfedale choir will be singing carols and festive songs, giving up their time for free at the event, which benefits the Lord Mayor's Appeal charities.

Mrs Butler has been involved for a number of years, and since her husband Alan died in 2009, has been hanging a star on the City Hall festive tree every year in his name.

She said: "I've done this every year since Alan died and I keep them all and hang them up at home all year round.

"It's a wonderful event to be involved in. A smaller group of us sing carols and Christmassy songs which helps make it a real festive occasion. We try to provide an ambient background to the event."

The Telegraph & Argus Christmas Star Appeal runs every year to allow Bradfordians to remember absent loved ones or to celebrate those people who have made a difference throughout the year.

Last year there were a total of 200 stars and already this year there have been more than 100 nominations.

This year's nominations will be unveiled at a special Christmas Star Appeal event being held at City Hall on Thursday, December 3.

It will be hosted by the Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Joanne Dodds, who will be hanging her own star in memory of her dad Peter Hobson, who died in 2010.

Proceeds from the Christmas stars will go towards the Lord Mayor’s Appeal, which this year is supporting Bradford Hospitals Children’s Charity and Cllr Dodds' Spread a Smile scheme offering grants to organisations and smaller groups across the Bradford district.

In order to nominate a loved one for a star, fill in the coupon below and send a cheque or postal order for £5 to: The Lord Mayor’s Appeal to: Christmas Star, Lord Mayor’s Appeal, City Hall, Bradford, BD1 1HY.
