CALDERDALE Council is reminding residents to put out their unwanted Halloween pumpkins with their weekly food waste collection.

It follows estimates that last year around 18,000 tonnes of pumpkins were simply thrown out in the UK, with many ending up in landfill sites.

The food waste collection service in Calderdale takes residents' waste food to a processing plant where it is then treated to produce gas which in turn generates electricity.

Each year the service collects around 5,000 tonnes of food waste, keeping it away from landfill.
