HUNDREDS of mudlarks proved they were muddy marvels at an event in Tong, Bradford.

More than 500 competitors took part in The Pain Barrier, a ten kilometre off road mud trail race, through and over natural obstacles.

Competitors travelled from Newcastle and Manchester to take part in the event at the Parkwood Outdoor arena, but the majority of people having a go were local, with ages ranging from 18 to 74.

The winner ploughed his way home in just under an hour, but many were just out to enjoy themselves, taking up to two and three quarter hours to make the finish.

Joint organiser Pete Hodges said the obstacles included pools, ponds, marshes and The Swamp of Suffering, which has to be waded through.

He said: "This is similar to obstacles races, but without the man-made obstacles. We think the natural challenges are tough enough for anybody!"

He added: "We have had men and women, young and old, and everyone seems to have enjoyed it. Some of those taking part are very competitive, but more often than not people are doing it for fun."
