A CLECKHEATON butcher's firm has taken home the top honours at the Great Yorkshire Pork Pie, Sausage and Black Pudding Competition.

B&M Collins Butchers, based in Westgate, won the flagship pork pie title at the 27th annual contest with its large pork pie.

Marjorie Collins, from the shop, and her daughter, Mary Johnson, received the Ted Jones Supreme Pork Pie Trophy from Yorkshire-born TV chef Brian Turner.

The family business was established 37 years ago by Billy and Marjorie Collins.

Mrs Johnson said: "The large pork pie is one of our best sellers - we source our pork from Worsley Wholesale Butchers in Liversedge - and the recipe is one we developed ourselves.

"It’s never changed. Our supreme champion pie is exactly what we sell in the shop and it was well worth getting up at 3am on the morning of the competition to make it. This is without doubt our greatest accolade to date."

The firm has performed well in previous Great Yorkshire competitions, winning the supreme pork pie championship in 2013 and becoming black pudding champions last year.

The competition, which was held at the Great Yorkshire Showground in Harrogate, on Sunday attracted 280 entries from 60 individual contestants. It was the first time it was open to entries nationwide.

Other winners included Keelham Farm Shop in Thornton and Skipton, who took second prize in both the small pork pie and speciality sausage categories.
