RESIDENTS are furious after sofas, mattresses and bags of rubbish were dumped outside houses on their estate.

People on Woodroyd Road and the neighbouring Parsonage Road and Mark Street, West Bowling, have complained about their streets being strewn with old furniture and litter, which is obstructing pavements and making the area dangerous.

Asam Khan, one of the concerned residents, said the rubbish had been attracting rats and other animals to the area.

He said: “The bags of rubbish are getting ripped open by animals and the rubbish is all over the street.

“It has been going on for a couple of months now, at the start it was just mattresses and sofas but now the bags of rubbish are taking over, and we have even had rats running around."

Mr Khan said he believed much of the rubbish had been left by tenants who rent properties in the area.

And he claimed MB Estates, which rents out some of the properties in the neighbourhood, should do more to tell its tenants not to throw rubbish out.

Mr Khan said: “All of the rubbish is left by the residents living there, and since there is such a turnaround of tenants they just throw the rubbish out so regularly.

“They need to educate their tenants that this is not acceptable.”

But MB Estates denied responsibility for the rubbish.

Mike Watkins, from MB Estates, said: “Bradford Council and council wardens should have been going round cleaning some of it up, and it’s not all our rubbish, as people are using that area as a dumping site.

“Technically speaking it is not our rubbish anyway, it is the residents’ rubbish, and it is on the pavement so it’s not on our property, so it’s not ours.

“If our caretakers find out who it is that is dumping rubbish, then we will tell the council, but it is not ours.”

A spokesman for Bradford Council said: “Problems of rubbish dumped on the pavement at Woodroyd Road have not been reported to us previously but we will investigate to see what the issues are after receiving a report today.

“Dumping large amounts of rubbish is illegal as well as anti-social. That’s why we do our best to find evidence to prosecute the criminals who do it.

“Our Environmental Enforcement Team use all possible means of gathering evidence including searching the waste and speaking to any eye witnesses to enable prosecution of perpetrators.

“If rubbish is tipped on Council land we clean it up as soon as possible and we try to ensure private land-owners do the same.

“Anyone with any information about fly-tippers can call the Council’s Environmental Enforcement team on 01274 434366, or email eh.admin@bradford.gov.uk. “
