TWO Bradford district breweries are among 11 new ones from Yorkshire to feature in a prestigious guide.

Bradford Brewery in Bradford and Wilsden-based Bingley Brewery have been named in The Good Beer Guide 2016, published today by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA).

A total of 147 Yorkshire breweries are featured in the guide. Greyhawk, at Skipton, is also among the 11 new breweries.

Darren Marks, owner of Bingley Brewery, only went full-time in April and does all the brewing himself, producing more than 20 casks every eight or nine days. His beers include golden, stout, bitter and American-style. He is helped with sales and marketing by a family friend and his daughter, Kathryn, 25.

WHICH FIVE DISTRICT PUBS ARE NEW TO THE GOOD BEER GUIDE THIS YEAR?

Mr Marks, 49, said: "I used to work in financial services, with an IT background. I wanted a change in life. I used to go on brewery tours and sample other people's beers. I had been thinking about doing it for eight years. I went on a course and started the brewery last year.

"It is far more enjoyable than sitting at a desk. I want to branch out, I'm enjoying brewing different things. We have a bar at the brewery and we distribute around Bingley, Shipley, Bradford, and even Scarborough.

"I hadn't thought about getting in the guide, so I was pleasantly surprised. It's an accolade and it puts us on the map."

Bradford Brewery opened earlier this year at the former headquarters of Shaw Moisture Meters in Rawson Road and marked the return of the brewing industry to central Bradford for the first time in more than 50 years.

The Yorkshire region now has 391 pubs listed in the guide, including 85 new entries.

The annual guide also gives details of the various beers brewed in the region, which include Barm Pot Bitter, a pale golden ale brewed by Goose Eye, near Keighley.

The guide’s editor, Roger Protz, said: “British brewing has never been in better health, with a third consecutive year of over ten per cent growth and more different beers being brewed than ever before.

"The range of beers available to beer drinkers now is colossal and we’re seeing real competition between pubs who want to serve the best selection of real ales, making the Good Beer Guide 2016 an indispensable book for those looking for the best pubs.”

The UK’s top pubs are also listed in the guide, with the Kelham Island Tavern in Sheffield named as one of 16 finalists in the Campaign for Real Ale’s National Pub of the Year competition.

Mr Protz added: “The Good Beer Guide 2016 is the only comprehensive and totally independent pub guide in the UK. Pubs are selected on their merit alone and CAMRA, as a not-for-profit organisation, are very proud of highlighting pubs chosen by local CAMRA branches across the UK. It is that local knowledge which ensures the pubs listed in the guide are genuinely the best you’ll find in the area.”

The pub guide is broken down by region, and also town, which makes it easy to find the best pubs in the area or another area of the country people might want to visit.
