CHILDREN who took part in a summer club are continuing with their new hobbies as the school term starts.

Cafe West's holiday sessions in Allerton pulled in nearly 170 people from the local community.

The scheme was funded by an Awards For All grant, with families given a free healthy lunch and taught how to cook low-cost nutritious meals.

Children were entertained with sessions in street dance, outdoor games, and arts and crafts.

Julie McCann, director at the cafe, said 167 people had signed up for the five-week programme, with some children now registered for weekly rugby and street dance groups.

"The aim of the program was to provide a safe area for families in the community to play and take part in physical activity and recreational activities," she said.

"Children and parents have learnt how to cook healthy balanced meals on a budget, and the camp has helped reduce isolation in some families and improved social cohesion.

"It’s been great watching all the families interact with each other, with mums and children making new friends."

The summer camp programme was put together by Rebecca Scholes, and delivered by Mrs McCann, Francis Hollings, and four students from Dixons Allerton Academy, Sana Mahmood, Zainab Mussa, Khadeeja Bashir and Mihromisa Akhtar.
