A DRUG addict has been jailed for an "appalling and life-threatening" spell of dangerous driving in Bradford where he reached 87mph on a 30mph street.

Married father-of-three Massoud Hussain raced through 11 red traffic lights as he led three police cars on a ten-minute chase through Bolton, Barkerend, Undercliffe and Manningham on June 21 this year, Bradford Crown Court heard yesterday.

Prosecutor Duncan Ritchie said Hussain hit speeds of between 50mph and 87 mph on various 30mph roads - many of them residential streets. His top speed of 87mph was on Keighley Road in Manningham before he turned onto Emm Lane.

Hussain, 34, of Butler Street West, Barkerend, careered down a grass embankment, raced along a pavement, bumped over a traffic island, caused vehicles on the other side of roads to swerve out of his path, and forced vehicles stopped at traffic lights out of the way.

Ash Mahmood, for Hussain, said his client had initially failed to stop for the police when instructed because a passenger in his car had threatened him not to.

Judge Mark Savill said: "It was appalling and life-threatening dangerous driving."

He added: "I am told that in the cold light of day you are ashamed of your driving - and so you should be.

"It was not only an extended period of some ten minutes and an extended period of quite disgraceful and life-threatening driving, it was nothing short of a miracle that no-one was killed on the day of this offence.

"Illegally and irrationally you decided to flee from police."

He added: "He will appreciate now, in the cold light of day, that if you are being threatened while three police cars are behind you, you could have stopped and asked one of the officers for help."

Mr Ritchie told the court of Hussain's route, which started on Canal Road at about 6.25pm. As police gave chase, Hussain raced along Bolton Lane, Ashbourne Avenue, Ashbourne Road, Shipley Airedale Road, Barkerend Road, New Otley Road, Otley Road, Idle Road, Valley View Grove, Bolton Road, Ashbourne Crescent, Ashbourne Avenue, Ashbourne Way, Botany Avenue, Kings Road, Queens Road - where he hit 85mph - Manningham Lane, Keighley Road, Emm Lane, North Park Road, Cleveland Road, Buxton Street, Park View Road, Oak Lane, Manningham Lane, Queens Road, Station Road, Canal Road and Kings Road, where police finally boxed him in.

Mr Mahmood said Hussain, who was jailed for eight months, had a long-standing drug addiction problem that he was voluntarily seeking help for.

He added: "He agrees it was appalling and utterly shameful behaviour on his part."

Hussain, who had pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to dangerous driving, was also given an 18-month driving ban that will start when he leaves jail, ordered to take a driving re-test, and told to pay a £900 criminal court surcharge.
