TWO men were being sought by police last night after a Volkswagen Golf collided with a car and a garden wall before it burst into flames.

The driver of the Golf and a passenger fled the scene after a collision with a Volkswagen Bora just after 6pm in Laisteridge Lane at its junction with Merton Road, near to Bradford University.

A witness said the driver of the red Golf limped a short distance before returning to the smoking car to fetch a bag from beneath the driver’s seat.

University student Chris Marsden, who lives opposite the scene, said: “I heard a crash, a big bang. I ran over and saw smoke. An Asian man jumped out of the driver’s seat, got across the road and then went back to the car. He was limping. He reached under the seat to get a bag.”

Mr Marsden, who dialled 999, said the police were the first on the scene, with a fire engine arriving around 30 minutes later.

He said passers-by had attempted to put the fire out using small extinguishers but had been unable to do so.

The Golf was thought to be a brand new, 2015-plate R Tsi.

A police spokesman said people in the Bora suffered minor injuries. He said the Golf had smouldered for some time before bursting into flames.

The fire service confirmed it attended a vehicle fire shortly after 6pm but the spokesman had no further information.
