A JEALOUS man who stabbed his former partner at least six times with a kitchen knife is to be sentenced for attempted murder at Bradford Crown Court.

Ladislav Grajcar, 35, told Jana Horvathova: "If I can't have you, no one can," before repeatedly plunging the weapon into her at her home in Bradford on April 4 this year.

Grajcar, of Sunningdale, Fairweather Green, Bradford, pleaded guilty to attempting to murder Miss Horvathova at an earlier hearing at the crown court.

Today, the Slovakian national was told by the Recorder of Bradford, Judge Roger Thomas QC, that he will be brought to the court to be sentenced on the afternoon of October 2.

Grajcar appeared in front of the judge by a video link to Leeds Prison where he is being held.

It was stated that he had refused to leave his cell to see a probation officer but Grajcar said that was not true.

He told the judge he had wanted to keep the appointment but was not taken to it in time by the prison authorities.

Judge Thomas said he believed Grajcar was telling the truth. He had heard accounts of similar difficulties from defendants being held on remand.

Another date would be fixed by the probation service, with an interpreter to assist Grajcar during the interview.

The judge told him that a psychologist or a psychiatrist would also be coming to see him in prison to assess his mental state.

Miss Horvathova was attacked after Grajcar, who was her estranged partner, called round at her home.

He took a knife from the kitchen and stabbed her while her children were present at the address.

She suffered a least six wounds, including incisions to her neck, chest and abdomen.

Miss Horvathova was rushed to intensive care and spent 12 days recovering in hospital.

Grajcar, who was apprehended in Leeds, was held in custody after his arrest.

He was due to be sentenced last month but the case was postponed to a date to be fixed when reports were not ready and his barrister was unavailable.
