A MAN accused of a late-night knife attack in a Keighley street told a jury he was asleep on the settee at home at the time.

Simon Tillotson is on trial at Bradford Crown Court denying unlawfully and maliciously wounding Anthony Wake with intent to do him grievous bodily harm.

Tillotson, 42, of Helme Lane, Meltham, near Huddersfield, also denies the less serious, alternative, charge of unlawful wounding.

The jury has been told that Mr Wake suffered serious slash injuries to his face and neck in an incident in Braithwaite Avenue, in the early hours of June 20 last year.

An England baseball cap with Tillotson's DNA on it was found at the scene.

It is alleged that he attacked Mr Wake after they and others had been drinking at a flat in the town.

Tillotson is said to have accused Mr Wake of flirting with his then girlfriend, Joanne Sinfield, before producing a knife and repeatedly lunging at him with the weapon.

But Tillotson told the court he was alone at Miss Sinfield's address in Greenfield Court, Braithwaite, that night and had nothing to do with the attack.

He said he and Miss Sinfield, who had since split up, had argued that night and she went out alone.

Tillotson said he fell asleep watching television and did not wake until Miss Sinfield returned home in the early hours.

He was arrested four days later and said he made no comment to the police on the advice of his solicitor.

Tillotson said Miss Sinfield told him about the knife incident and his name was being given locally in connection with it.

He told the court she used to borrow his England baseball cap.

The trial continues.
