A WOMAN whose mother raised funds from her bedside at Bradford's Marie Curie hospice is taking part in this weekend's Walk to Remember in her memory.

Elaine Reardon, of Tong Street, died aged 52, following a long battle with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

Mrs Reardon was so moved by the care given to her at the Marie Curie hospice that she began selling cakes and buns from her bedside to raise funds. Before she died in 2013 she urged her daughter, Debbie Hughes, to continue her fundraising.

Debbie and sister-in-law Carrie Broadbent are now members of the charity’s Idle fundraising group and this weekend they will take part in the Marie Curie Walk to Remember in Temple Newsam Park, Leeds.

Debbie, 32, of Idle, said: “When my mum was in the hospice nothing was too much for them to do for us.

“I thought the work they did was amazing. I will always be thankful to Marie Curie for the support they give to my family at a very difficult time.

“When I think how much we were helped as a family, I want to keep that going for others.

“When it comes to a time you really need someone, you can rely on Marie Curie, not just for the patient but their whole family.”

Mrs Reardon had attended the hospice’s Better Breathe Group then became an inpatient before returning home. The grandmother-of-three was moved back to the hospice in September 2013.

Matt Carruthers, events manager for Marie Curie, said: “Walk to Remember is a great opportunity to get together with friends and family, and think of loved ones that have passed away, whilst taking in some of the country’s beautiful scenery.

“By signing up for Walk to Remember in Temple Newsam and reaching the fundraising target, you’ll be helping Marie Curie provide expert care, guidance and support to help people living with a terminal illness get the most from their time.”

The Marie Curie Walk to Remember is at Temple Newsam Park is on Saturday at 6.30pm. It will be followed by a firework and lantern display and live music. It is part of a national series of 10k walks at 17 venues throughout the UK this summer.

Registration is £10 per person (children under-16 go free, and on the night adult registration is £20) and there is a minimum fundraising ask of £100, which pays for five hours of care from Marie Curie.
