PRIMARY school pupils turned back the clock several centuries for a Medieval-themed end of term event.

Knowleswood Primary School in Holme Wood was transformed into an old village by 60 Year 4 pupils as part of a project they have been working on throughout the year with Roots and Wings, a cultural group.

The school hosted the Tournament of the Golden Feather, which saw pupils divide up into different guilds, from apothecaries to blacksmiths, to enjoy a number of historical activities.

Children and their families could buy a Medieval shilling for 10p, which then could be exchanged for different goods or activities.

The unique event even attracted some Medievalists to the school to offer help recreating their favourite time period.

As part of their year long project the school even visited the international Medieval Congress, held in Leeds.

Mary Robson, a director of Roots to Wings, said: "This was the culmination of a year of work where we have been focusing on the Medieval period. They could exchange their shillings for things like having their name written in Arabic by an Eight Century African scribe.

"It has been a really great day. We'll be back next year to work with children on a different theme."
