MUMS-TO-BE are being given the chance to try a water-based exercise class for free at their local swimming pool.

Six Bradford council pools are running aqua natal classes, which will involve 30 minutes of gentle exercise followed by 15 minutes gentle swimming and relaxation.

Studies show that women who exercise during pregnancy are likely to have a shorter labour, return to their pre-pregnancy weight quicker, strengthen their pelvic floor and are less likely to suffer from maternal diabetes.

Councillor Imran Khan, Bradford Council's executive member for sport and leisure (pictured), said: "These classes are a wonderful way for pregnant women to unwind, make new friends and stay healthy during pregnancy.

"It's important that everyone finds time for some exercise. Parents are role models for their children and if exercising is a normal part of life, children will make it part of theirs too."

The classes are available at pools at Bingley, Bowling, Eccleshill, Ilkley, Queensbury and the Richard Dunn Sports Centre in Odsal.

The first class is free and subsequent classes are £3 each, or £2 for Passport to Leisure holders. Phone Bradford Aquatics on (01274) 438791.
