PUPILS from some of the city's primary schools are taking over the district's biggest art gallery.

Children from Hollingwood and Farnham schools will be learning to run Cartwright Hall Art Gallery in Lister Park during three takeover days.

Last year pupils from Hollingwood Primary pupils took over the running of the gallery, and they are involved again this year.

Pupils from Farnham Primary School will also be trying their hand at taking over for the day tomorrow.

Each school group is spending a full day in the gallery. The mornings will be spent behind the scenes working alongside the museum staff, learning about what goes on in museums and undertaking a wide range of tasks and jobs, such as caring for museum collections, guilding frames, answering visitors’ queries and identifying pests.

Bradford Council’s Museum Manager Janet Simmonds said: "I’m delighted that Hollingwood Primary School are taking over Cartwright Hall Art Gallery again this year and that Farnham Primary are having a go too. Learning more about how such facilities as art galleries work is very valuable. We are pleased to be embedding this into our learning programme for schools and it gives pupils ideas of possible future careers."

Councillor Susan Hinchcliffe, the Council's executive member for education, skills and culture, said: “This is a great opportunity for the Key Stage 2 pupils from these primary schools to experience a day at one of Bradford's best cultural assets.

“The visit will give them a greater appreciation of Bradford's heritage and an understanding of everything that is involved in running the gallery. The children will also be giving guided tours to their friends and families.”
