A MAN who wanted some bread was caught drink-driving in Bradford after popping to a 24-hour shop in the early hours of the morning, a court heard.

Kevin Marshall was arrested at about 2am on May 2 after officers spotted his red Vauxhall Corsa in Fagley. He gave a breath-test reading of 47 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35 microgrammes.

Bradford and Keighley Magistrates' Court heard that police had seen him appearing unsteady on his feet as he left a shop on Gain Lane, before using his car to balance himself.

Officers then watched him drive off and saw him briefly veer his Vauxhall Corsa on to the wrong side of the road, the court heard. He was pulled over on Harrogate Road.

Marshall, who was not represented in court and admitted drink-driving, told magistrates that he suffered from lung condition chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

He said: "If I do more than seven metres I struggle to breathe. Then I struggle with my balance."

He said he did not drink alcohol because of his medication, but that he had been given what he thought was an energy drink at a party earlier in the night.

Marshall, 58, of Ravenscliffe Avenue, Ravenscliffe, also said he only drove on the wrong side of the road to avoid speed bumps in his "tiny car".

He added: "I know I wanted some bread, but I don't know why. That is why I went to the 24-hour shop."

Marshall was banned from driving for a year, fined £120 and told to pay £85 court costs, a £20 surcharge and a £150 court charge.
