BRADFORD councillor Debbie Davies, dressed as the Baildon Beaver, took part in the Mascot Gold Cup charity race at Wetherby Races to raise funds for Manorlands Hospice.

The event on Sunday, in aid of Sue Ryder homes, had over 100 comically clad entrants, including Richard Parker, editor of the Telegraph & Argus’s sister paper the Keighley News, in the costume of a scoop-hungry newshound.

“It was great fun, but I performed really badly over the furlong – my son Oliver said I didn’t even try!” Cllr Davies said.

“He claimed I came in 118 out of 128, but I don’t know how accurate his figures are.

“I saw Richard Parker clutching a copy of the Keighley News at the start line, but he soon showed me a clean pair of paws and I soon started walking and clambering over the hay bale jumps.

“Also, I had a big wobbly head and because I had to hold it on with my hands I looked like a beaver with a Sunday hangover,” Cllr Davies said.

She hopes to raise at least £500 for Manorlands and late donations can still be made via http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/DebbieDavies5
