A NEW service started today by Diabetes UK to help Muslims donate to charity during the holy month of Ramadan.

For Muslims with diabetes, Ramadan can pose challenges as fasting can be dangerous to those with the health condition, and eating large meals before and after fasting can also increase the risk of high blood glucose levels.

The new Text Ramadan service enables people to easily donate £3 straight from their mobile phone, which could help the charity provide guidance on fasting safely during Ramadan.

Juliet O’Brien, diverse communities officer at Diabetes UK said: “This year Ramadan falls in summer, meaning the length of fast could be 17 hours or more. For Muslims with diabetes this could lead to a much higher risk of hypoglycaemia and dehydration, as well as an increased chance of high glucose levels at Suhoor and Iftar.”

She added: “If you are considering fasting this summer and have diabetes, then you should make sure to speak to both your Imam and your GP in advance to discuss the risks before making your final decision.”
