A MOTORIST has released dramatic dashboard footage of a white van man's "downright dangerous" overtaking manoeuvre.

An unidentified driver in a van, marked with Bingley-based firm Elecktec's logo, has been caught on a dashboard camera overtaking near Cottingley Village Primary School.

Ian Lee, 62, of Rosetta Drive, Fairweather Green, Bradford, was driving his Volvo V70 which had two motorbikes on a trailer.

His vehicle was overtaken by the van, which prompted Mr Lee to post the 35-second footage on his Facebook page, which has now been viewed almost 33,000 times.

In the film, the driver is seen travelling up Cottingley Moor Road, past the school.

A car is then parked up ahead on the left-hand side, which prompted the car driver to overtake.

To do so, he moved onto the right-hand side of the road and drove to the right of a keep left sign located on a pedestrian refuge island.

But the van driver overtook the car and continued to travel up the right-hand side of the road.

Fortunately, no cars were passing the other way at the time the van overtook.

Mr Lee, who is a motorbike riding instructor, said: "I was disgusted and gobsmacked by it.

"That's a right advert for the company the van driver works for too.

"It was downright dangerous. I was not scared in the slightest. What worried me was the place he did it. The kids from the school could have been coming out.

"It was a dumb thing to do.

"It could have been much worse."

The incident took place on March 17 at just after 3.50pm.

Now the van driver's actions have also been condemned on Mr Lee's Facebook page.

One person said: "Show this to the police. Blatant disregard of the Highway code and other people's safety."

Another person posted: "It's about time that idiots like this realised that there are now a lot of vehicles on the roads equipped with cameras to spot just such stupid driving.

"I hope someone is going to contact the company who own the van."

Darren Holdsworth, Elecktec managing director, who has seen the footage, said the firm were in contact with police to find out the identity of the van driver.

He said: "It's terrible. There are always pedestrians about on that road.

"They should have overtaken somewhere safer. It is a long, open road.

"We don't want our vehicles being driven like that. Until we have a registration of the van, we are powerless.

"We have spoken to the police about it.

"We have nine vans. No-one has come forward yet, our hands are tied. We have written in our health and safety manual about courtesy on the road.

"In the eyes of the public, it is the company, not the driver, who is to blame here.

"We have spoken to staff about it and sent them an email too."

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "A 27-year-old man from Halifax has been reported for summons in relation to this offence.
"West Yorkshire Police would like to thank the company for their co-operation with this inquiry."
