TWO Bradford brothers have been given prison sentences totalling more than 12 years after a car dealer was ambushed and held up at gunpoint and police officers were threatened with a hammer on a garage forecourt.

Thomas Adams, 23, of Carr Street, Bankfoot, was jailed for eight years and four months for burglary, robbery with an imitation firearm and violent disorder.

Robert Adams, 26, of Fairburn Gardens, Eccleshill, was imprisoned for four years for committing burglary and violent disorder with his brother.

Bradford Crown Court heard yesterday that the offences were all connected to vehicles and the motor trade.

The brothers pleaded guilty to being part of a gang that broke into an industrial unit and stole £12,000 of off-road motorbikes on November 10, 2013.

They pulled steel shutters off the runners at a business park near Hebden Bridge in the targeted burglary.

On July 6 last year, two car dealers from Lancashire were lured to Bradford after placing an advert on internet site Gumtree asking for parts for an Audi S3, prosecutor Peter Hampton told the court today.

Fenan Sarwar and his friend Mr Latif brought £2,000 in cash in envelope and were directed to Hawes Avenue, near the M606.

From there, they were lured down a secluded cul-de-sac by Thomas Adams who jumped into their van and gave them directions, Mr Hampton said.

Mr Sarwar and Mr Latif felt uneasy when two other men appeared next to their vehicle at a small stand alone garage.

Thomas Adams took the ignition keys and produced a black handgun from the waistband of his trousers.

"He shouted 'Give me the money' and pointed the gun at Mr Latif. Mr Sarwar threw the envelope at Thomas Adams and all three men fled," Mr Hampton said.

Both victims identified Thomas Adams as the gunman. He was arrested and re-bailed.

On August 24, two PCSOs travelling upstairs on a bus saw two hooded men behaving suspiciously at German Autocare in Richardshaw Drive, Pudsey, the court heard.

Adam Scott and Karl Indriks-Clay grabbed Thomas Adams but he was strong, aggressive and difficult to restrain.

Off-duty officer, Detective Constable Jessica Sellars, had joined in the struggle when a dark blue Mitsubishi drove to within a metre of the incident, revving up its engine.

Thomas Adams shouted: "Run them over. Get them off me."

Robert Adams, who was not the driver, swung a hammer at the officers and both brothers escaped.

A witness saw two men "celebrating and hugging as though they had got away with something".

The brothers were arrested after they were traced through clothing dumped nearby and a phone dropped at the scene.

In mitigation the court heard that neither brother had any previous convictions for violence and both worked.

Thomas Adams did not use a real gun and no-one was hurt in the commission of any of the offences.
