A CALL for funding for the first mixed-ability rugby world cup in Bingley this summer has attracted government support.
Sports Minister Helen Grant hinted funding for the event would be available as she agreed to a meeting with Shipley MP Philip Davies. The tournament will see players with learning or physical disabilities playing alongside non-disabled players and was pioneered by the Bumble Bees Barbarians RFU Team.
Known as “The Bumbles” it is based at the Bradford and Bingley rugby club in Wagon Lane, Bingley. The competition to be held at the club from August 17 has so far attracted more than 400 players and delegates from ten nations, Mr Davies, who also thanked Bradford South MP Gerry Sutcliffe, the Bumbles’ patron for his support, said he will continue to push for the meeting.
