BRADFORD Council's deputy director of children's services will soon retire from the post.

Cindy Peek, who has been in the role for seven years, said she had planned her retirement for some time, but wanted to wait until new director of children's services Michael Jameson had settled in his post before she left.

She will retire on April 7.

During her time at the council, she has overseen the development of 15 new schools across the district, including nine special schools, worked towards alleviating child poverty and led on the development of the Industrial Centres of Excellence programme.

She said: "I’ve loved every minute of my time here and I will be very sad to leave so many good friends and colleagues who I’d like to thank for their support. It’s been a real privilege to work alongside so many committed people in such a vibrant city. Together, I believe we’ve achieved a huge amount for young people.

"I’ve been planning my retirement for some time but didn’t want to leave just at the point Michael Jameson, our new strategic director, took up his post. With Michael now firmly at the helm, I believe the time is right to step down.”

Mr Jameson said: "In addition to the huge amount she has achieved in her role, I personally have found her help invaluable in ensuring a smooth and stable transition so we can continue to provide the services young people and families need. I would like to wish Cindy all the very best for her retirement.”

Councillor Ralph Berry, Portfolio Holder for Children’s Services, said: "She has been a passionate advocate for young people and her commitment to tackling child poverty and in developing Industrial Centres of Excellence will leave a lasting benefit for the district.”
