WIBSEY High Street in Bradford had to be closed tonight to allow firefighters in to tackle a chimney fire which spread into the roof at the White Swan Inn.
The problem was discovered by landlady Gill Simpson when she found smoke in the first floor of the building and firefighters found fumes leaking out from a large section of the roof when they arrived, though no flames were visible.
Occupants had already been evacuated.
Firefighters used a hydraulic platform to reach the roof and were able to strip away stone slates to reach the damaged area while colleagues also worked from inside.
They were able to confine the damage to a relatively small area and Mrs Simpson said the pub would not be affected by the incident, because damage was restricted to the roof area.

Firefighters from the Odsal, Bradford and Fairweather Green stations were involved in the operation and Mrs Simpson said they had done "a fantastic job".
It is believed the fire was caused by roof timbers joining the chimney being set alight by heat, then spreading in the roof void.
