CLECKHEATON'S town hall was targeted by ram-raiders who tried to break into the building and steal cash in the early hours of this morning.

Police said suspects used two vehicles stolen from the Bradford area yesterday - a Land Rover Discovery and a Mitsubishi Shogun - as part of the raid.

Both vehicles were driven to the side of Spenborough Town Hall just before 2.40am, and the Land Rover was then used to crash into the building.

Police said suspects gained entry to the town hall before unsuccessfully trying to remove the cashier counter.

The Shogun was then used by the suspects to flee the scene.

The Land Rover was left at the town hall and the Shogun was later recovered.

Police are appealing for witnesses and have begun an investigation into the raid.

Detective Inspector Stef Wiseman, of Kirklees CID, said: "We are appealing for any witnesses to the incident to get in contact.

"Even though this happened late at night, it was in the middle of the town and will have caused significant disruption.

"If you saw or heard anything suspicious, please contact CID on 101."
